Calc bc sequences and series11/25/2023 ![]() Candidates should take courses in these areas that are comparable to courses taken by subject majors. We require strong preparation in the areas of science and mathematics that are basic to medical studies. The Committee on Admissions considers the level of coursework completed when evaluating candidates’ academic performance and determining their suitability for medicine. Please note that these requirements are subject to change from one application cycle to the next therefore, students should review our requirements prior to the application cycle in which they decide to apply. We encourage students to pursue interdisciplinary courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics and the integration of principles across the preclinical sciences. Although the Committee on Admissions has established course requirements in discrete subject areas, we will consider alternative course formats or combinations that demonstrate equivalent preparation. Preparation for medical school in the 21st century should reflect contemporary developments in medical knowledge, the pace of discovery, and the permeation of biochemistry, cell biology, and genetics into most areas of medicine. A series converges to a sum S if and only if the sequence of its partial sums converges to S.General Comments Regarding Course Requirements. The kth partial sum of a series is the sum of its first k terms.Series can be expressed as a sum of (infinitely many) terms or by using sigma notation. Now that we’ve gone over the series fundamentals, let’s recap. Now we can actually find the sum series, based on the general formula for the partial sums!Īfter all of the cancellations, this telescoping series collapses down to converge on the value 1. Once you cancel out those middle terms, there will only be two terms remaining in the partial sum, the first term 1/1 = 1, and the last term. I’ve highlighted the cancelling terms in red and blue. Let’s write out the first four partial sums. The multiple sections of the telescope could slide into each other.Ī telescoping series is one whose terms cancel with one another in a certain way.įor example, consider the following series. Small telescopes used to be made to collapse for easy storage. There’s even a neat geometric argument to show why the sum is 2. In fact, this series converges to the value 2. This series is the sum of the reciprocals of the powers of 2. On the other hand, the following series converges: In this case, the general term a n = n itself blows up to ∞. In fact, any series whose general terms a n do not tend to zero will diverge. More precisely, the partial sums are unbounded. That makes sense, right? If you keep adding larger numbers, the running total just gets bigger and bigger. ![]() The series of all natural numbers (counting numbers) clearly diverges to infinity. Here are some easy examples to get you started. Next would be s 5 having five terms, and so on.īy definition, the series Σ a n converges to a sum S if and only if the sequence of partial sums converges to S. Of course, the list of partial sums goes on forever. So for example, the first four partial sums of a series are: The kth partial sum for a series Σ a n is the sum of the first k terms of the series: The precise definition for convergence of a series has to do with its partial sums. Here, we would say the series diverges (but not to ∞ nor -∞). As you add term after term, the value of the sum keeps jumping around or oscillating among multiple values. In that case, we say that the series diverges to negative infinity (-∞) The sum gets smaller and smaller (that is, large negative) without bound. Then we say that the series diverges to infinity (∞). ![]()

New mexico atomic bomb11/25/2023 ![]() ![]() The stuff later rained down, cooled and turned solid. But a 2010 study found that the sand was actually pulled up into the heart of the explosion, where high temperatures liquified it. At first, scientists assumed that the grains of sand that turned into this material had melted at ground level. Our understanding of trinitite has changed recently. Plenty of trinitite was still there in September 1945, when a Time magazine report described the crater as "a lake of green jade shaped like a splashy star." Physicists realized that this trinitite was desert sand that melted down during the blast and then re-solidified. The substance is now known as "trinitite." Most were olive green in color - though some samples were black or reddish in hue. Over the radio, he announced that the area had turned " all green." A layer of small, glassy beads covered the crater. Anderson and his driver inspected the Trinity blast site shortly after the bomb detonated. So began the Atomic Age.īack in New Mexico, scientists discovered that the explosion that started it all had left something behind. Within a month, the United States used two atomic bombs to level both Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan and help bring World War II to an end. This marked the first deployment of an atomic weapon in recorded history. Mountain Time, a plutonium bomb - known simply as "The Gadget" - was detonated at the site. Screenflow 411/25/2023 ![]() ![]() This requires recording double the amount of data – but still maintaining low enough file sizes as to not bog down your computer memory. We have re-written the recording engine to take full advantage of Apple’s high resolution Retina displays. In ScreenFlow 4, although the interface has very few changes, (which we consider a GOOD thing, as we’ve worked hard to make it intuitive and easy to use we would not change that without very good reason to do so.) we have made significant changes ‘under the hood’. Take for example Apple (who introduce new operating systems and software yearly, at an upgrade price), and Adobe (regularly updating its creative suite software for an upgrade price). And this is a fairly standard practice in the software industry. We feel that 30% of purchase price is a fair price to pay for one of our upgrades. But when we offer a release that has significant new features, we consider that an upgrade, and we charge for that. We do offer our maintenance (bug fix) releases for free. The software development business is always a balance between fixing bugs that exist - some that are inherent in our software, some due to the fact that we can’t possibly anticipate every workflow that our thousands of customers will use, and some introduced as new peripheral products get introduced – such as new Operating Systems and new cameras and microphones - and trying to add more value and stay atop of the latest online developments. Version 4.0 also contains hundreds of bug fixes as well as improvements in memory usage and general performance. First transistor 194711/25/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In a press release in 1956, Sperry Rand hailed their perfection of high-speed magnetic amplifiers, brand named FERRACTORS, and stated: “The computer opens up an era in which filament tubes and transistors will be outmoded by devices of this kind.” 62 The computers introduced by Sperry Rand in 1960 (UNIVAC SS80/90) and 1961 (UNIVAC SS80/90 II) were made with magnetic amplifiers. Magnetic amplifiers were pursued most aggressively by Remington Rand and subsequently Sperry Rand, although also by IBM, Burroughs, Raytheon and Logistics Research Corporation. Three of the most promising alternatives were thyratribs (hot filament gas tubes), tronodes (miniature bi-stable neon gas tubes) and magnetic amplifiers (iron-cored or ferrite-cored inductors). The transistor was not the only possible alternative to the vacuum tube and again, the government funded competitive investigations. ![]() If the transistor had been perfected by an organization committed to appropriating every advantage from its innovation, not in making the innovation “public property,” then the subsequent growth in the semiconductor, and all related, including computer industries, would certainly have been very different. This issue will be extensively explored in the next chapter. 61 In AT&T’s case, the fact that it was a monopoly mattered, based on historical practice, but more importantly, it was because AT&T executives truly saw themselves as a service business. Those analyzing Bell Lab’s important open policy conclude Bell Labs knew the transistor was too important to keep to themselves knew they had more to gain than lose from wide-spread use might have suspected that the government would have forced such a policy in any case, especially in light of the Justice Department’s antitrust case filed in 1949 and such a policy was consistent with their past practice. For example, the military was told only one week before the public announcement to prevent them from blocking its release on the grounds of national security they held seminars in the early 1950’s when they shared all they knew about transistor technology and in 1952 they licensed the technology to all comers for a minimum royalty of 5% of sales. 60 (For their achievement, all three received the Nobel Prize.) Public announcement was delayed, however, until later in 1948.įrom public announcement onward, Bell Labs, and thus AT&T, consistently acted to effect wide disclosure and use of transistor technology. Shockley to work out the seminal principle of a solid-state transistor over the following five weeks. Brattain and John Bardeen, experimentalist and theorist respectively, demonstrated a crude, but working, amplifying transistor made from germanium and wires. It would take over two years, but on December 23, 1947, the first transistor was demonstrated at Bell Telephone Laboratories. 59 Three months later, Bell Labs issued an “Authorization for Work” to investigate making transistors from solid-state materials. 58 The war time scientific culture also encouraged communication and cooperation among all researchers – an example was a “Meeting on Germanium Crystals” held at Bell Labs on Apamong university and industrial laboratory scientists. During World War II, the government significantly increased funding of semiconductor research at Bell Labs, universities and industrial companies, and created MIT Radiation Laboratory to coordinate the research. Once again the government played a major role in pushing theory into practice. 57īut investigators lacked pure enough materials to create semiconductors. ![]() And profoundly different than a vacuum tube, a transistor worked not by electrons flowing through voltage gradient, but by channeling them in semiconductor materials. Amplification had two purposes: to let a very small current control a very large one, and to boost signals to overcome circuit noise so signals with information could be detected. Switching on-off made possible the conversion of an analog signal, electricity, to the 0’s and 1’s of a digital signal. Driving and funding the search for an alternative was the military.Ī transistor is a device that accomplishes the two necessary tasks of switching on-offand amplification. 56 Everyone knew an alternative had to be found to vacuum tubes if computers were to be made more reliable, faster, smaller, and consume less power and generate less heat. The transistor was the first of three technological discontinuities to radically alter the dynamics and structure of the computer market-structure. ![]()
